FIRE AT LAUREL MALL

On Saturday, February 19, 2011 as the Engine, Chief and Acting/B Chief were battling a multiple alarm brush fire, several LVRS Volunteers reported to the station to get another crew together. At approximately 1400 hours, as Squad 49 was en route to the staging area for the brush fire, they noticed heavy black smoke coming from the back of Laurel Mall. Squad 49 pulled up to the rear of Burlington Coat Factory and found a dumpster fire that had spread to the building at the loading dock. The crew from Squad 49 notified communications to start the working fire assignment and then made entry into the building and began evacuating the building. The Squad crew made their way through Burlington and into the smoke-filled receiving dock.

Chief 49A Gibson and Squad 49 worked with Engine 811 to extinguish the dumpster and involved building. The A Chief and Squad 49 cleared the incident approximately 2 hours later.

Large Brush Fire brings Baltimore City FD To Quarters:
5400blk of Van Dusen Road

At 1059 hrs on Saturday morning, Engine 49 was alerted for the brush fire in the area of the mulch pile on Van Dusen Road. Engine 49 arrived on scene to find a large brush fire that had a head start due to high winds in the area. Engine 49 mounted an offensive attack with multiple companies on the scene. Twice, Engine 49 had to abandon operations, disconnect lines and drive to a safe area to operate. Engine 49 had to drive through a chain-link fence and through the fire, to stop from loosing the Engine. Crews managed to work all day and well into the night before finally being relieved and allowed to return to quarters for the duration of the night while mutual aid companies contained the fire. Engine 49 operated for 12 hours before returning to quarters out of service. Chief 49 had operations for the first 12 hours along with Acting/B Chief Williams having fueling operations and staging.

Company 49 would like to thank Baltimore City Squad 40 and Baltimore City Engine 66 for assisting in protecting the citizens of Laurel, yesterday.
