Crash on 198 - 3 cars, 1 trapped

November 15, 2009. Shortly after the Redskins first win in over a month, the volunteers from LVRS were alerted to Rt 198 for the crash with one trapped. Shortly after E810 arrived on the scene, they reported 3 vehicles with multiple patients and one still trapped. Rescue Squad 849 was special requested to the scene to assist in the extrication. The crew from the Squad went to work to extricate the driver from one of the cars. The patient was extricated in less than 10 minutes, then packaged and transported to a local hospital.

No Rest for the Weary

Volunteer Staffing Day - Early in the evening of November 9th, as the volunteers began to relax after the numerous calls throughout the morning and afternoon, the tones sounded once again. At about quarter of five Engine 849 was alerted to Anne Arundel County for a house fire with report of one trapped in the back bedroom. Arriving just behind the first due unit with heavy smoke showing, the crew from E849 secured a water supply and began a primary search for the victim. As the search was performed, the first due unit stretched a handline protecting E849's crew and any possible victims along with getting a quick knock on the fire. After the primary search was found to be negative, E849's crew opened up the ceilings finding some extension to the attic area. Through the quick actions of the volunteer crews, the fire was contained to a back bedroom. The crews cleared in under an hour.

2 Extrications in 10 hours

On November 6th, RS849 ran two extrications within 10 hours. The first came in just after 1000 at Baltimore Ave. and Cinder Rd. in Co 831’s area. See story below (thanks Mark).

After the crew got back and had a chance to rest up, the second call came out about 1900 for a Motor Vehicle Crash at Sandy Spring Rd. and Sweitzer Ln. E810 arrived on the scene and upgraded the call to multiple people trapped in two different cars. RS814 was dispatched as the second Rescue Squad. Upon arriving on the scene, RS849 went to work on the first car that had 2 people trapped. Upon further scene size-up, there was only one vehicle with entrapment, so RS814 assisted RS849 in removing the roof and spreading the dash to free the trapped patients in the first vehicle.

Two Injured in Beltsville Crash

Just after 10:00 AM, Friday, November 6, 2009, Firefighters and Paramedics from Beltsville and Laurel Fire/EMS Stations responded to a multi-vehicle crash with 2 occupants trapped within the wreckage of their vehicles. The crash occurred in the 12800 block of Baltimore Avenue, just north of the Muirkirk Road overpass. There were a total of four vehicles involved that sustained some type of damage.
Firefighter/Medics from Beltsville Fire/EMS Station 831 and a heavy-duty rescue squad and paramedics from the Laurel Fire/EMS Station #849, an EMS Command Officer and Incident Commander/Battalion Chief 806 operated on the scene. Off-duty firefighters arrived on the scene first and were able to relay to responding fire/EMS units of the number and types of injuries. Upon arrival, a second heavy-duty rescue squad from Berwyn Heights Fire/EMS Station #814 was requested as two vehicles had the driver trapped and required extrication, however, was not needed as firefighters from the Laurel Rescue Squad worked quickly to free the most seriously injured trapped occupant first and then proceeded to extricate the second driver from the other vehicle.

Paramedics transported a teen-aged female and adult male to a Trauma Center. Both patients were suffering from potentially serious injuries. All injuries appeared to be non-life threatening. Maryland State Police - College Park are investigating the crash.
