Bowie Rd Burns Again – 3 Alarm Fire Next to Co 49

On Sunday (February 17) afternoon as crews were about to go out and get lunch, our neighbors once again decided to give us a visit and tell us that the apartments on Bowie Rd. had a lot of smoke coming from them. RE849 and CH849A arrived on the scene of 14801 Bowie Rd with heavy smoke showing. The amount of fire and the structural compromise during the incident eventually caused it to go to 3 alarms.

After the crews forced entry to the apartment that was currently under renovations from the earlier fire that occurred last July, they encountered fire coming up the stairwell. RE849's crew descended down the stairs to the fire and initiated an attack. Shortly after the start of the attack, the floors in the building started collapsing throwing the crew onto the ground. Evacuation tones were sounded shortly thereafter.

While the crews were attacking the interior fire, the fire spread very quickly to 14803 and 14805 due to the fact that the buildings were very open and still under construction, resulting in heavy fire on all floors. RE849 set up the portable deluge gun to help contain the fire. Later in the incident crews held a gas fire from spreading back into the building and also assisted other units with hitting hot spots. RE849, A849 (A498), A849B (A496), C849, and CH849A remained on the scene for over 8 hours. Although there was a FF close call, there were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Squad Goes to Howard County

Wednesday, February 6th at 1400 Squad 849 was alerted to 8110 Fleming St .  The first arriving unit reported light smoke showing.  SQ849 with 8 personnel split their crew, with half set up as RIC and the other half performing overhaul.  SQ849 was released within 45 min.

Water Rescue 49 Alerted

On the afternoon of February 2, 2008, multiple units from Bowie, WR856, TR822, WR849 and CH849A were alerted for the car in the water on Governors Bridge Road . Once it was determined that there were no victims in the area or in the vehicle, the units assisted the tow truck operator in removing the vehicle from the water. It should be noted that the vehicle was on the edge of the road and as soon as the tow truck started to move the vehicle, the vehicle rolled off of the road and flipped over. This call was a perfect example that if you need to assist tow companies in the removal of a vehicle from the water, you must have the appropriate equipment and training.
