Head-on Collision: 197 & Powder Mill Road - AGAIN

November 27, 2005. At approximately midnight Rescue Squad 49 was dispatched to the area of Powder Mill Road and 197 for a crash with reports of multiple people trapped. This was the second call in a week for the same area of 197 that has had a history of serious crashes. Upon arrival the units from Bowie discovered two cars each with the drivers as Priortiy 1 multisystem trauma and very much trapped in their cars. Chief 49 took the command and requested a second squad and second medic unit. Until Squad 18 arrived, the crew from Rescue Squad 49 worked both cars. Upon Squad 18's arrival, the crew from Glenn Dale took over one car and the Squad 49 rejoined and focused efforts on the other. Both patients were extricated quickly and flown to local trauma centers.

Chimney Fire in Howard County

November 26, 2005.  In the late Saturday afternoon, LVRS was alerted to a house on fire in Howard County.  Upon arrival Chief 49B reported fire coming from the chimney on side Bravo that had extended into the house. The crew from Rescue Squad 49 were the second arriving unit and went to work.  The crew of 6 split up and half went to work with the understaffed Howard County engine on the scene and the other half completed the search and began ventilation.  Chief 49B briefly had the command until the arrival of Battalion Chief 1 and then was given Division 3.  Briefly after the crews made the initial attack the chimney collapsed.  Crews from LVRS worked for a little over an hour and no injuries were reported.

THANKSGIVING!

11/24/05 Members cooked a turkey with a great showing around the station in support of the holiday. The station maintained a suppression crew as well as 2 ambo crews throughout the entire day. Dinner was served to the approx. 12 members as well as the medics. Thanks for cooking to Chuck and Irene!

Lions Club Christmas Tree Unloading

Lions Club Christmas Tree unloading on Sunday, November 20 at Laurel Mall. It was a brisk but sunny day as we unloaded the trees. Hector the Clown from Company 10 made sure we had Christmas music to work by. Several local firestations and others helped out unloading almost 900 trees in 42 minutes!!!!

  • Channel 6 Simplex North Side Fire Ground. Not Recorded. Use Channel 4.
  • Channel 7 South Side EMS
  • Channel 8 Primary Operations Channel for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Secondary South Side Operations Channel
  • Channel 9 Primary Operations for Stations 10, 49, 31 and 41.
    Additionally used for mutual aide to Howard County (within first alarm response area) if not in operations within Prince George's County.
  • Channel 10 Primary Operations foe Stations 1, 55, 34, 44, 12 and 11.

Please make sure you pay attention to the radio dispatch. If there is already an incident on channel 9, channel 4 will be used.

Head-on MVC - 197 & Old Laurel Bowie

November 19, 2005. At approximately 1700 hours LVRS was alerted the MVA with report of people trapped on 197 and the B/W Parkway. Responding units from Bowie discovered the crash just south of Old Laurel Bowie Road. Upon arrival C39A reported two vehicles involved in a head on crash with both drivers still pinned. Upon arrival Rescue Squad 49 went to work and quickly extricated the patients from both vehicles. One was transported via ground and one was air lifted to a local trauma center.

Apartment Fire

Sunday, November 13 - At around 1:30pm the box came out for 13036 Old Stage Coach Rd. RE49 arrived on scene arrived on scene to find a 3 story apartment building with heavy smoke showing. RE49 advanced a line inside and began putting a knock on the fire when crews were evacuated due to the fire moving through the roof. Crews extinguished the fire and remained on scene for about 3 1/2 hours.

CVS Store Opening

On Saturday 11/12/05 members attended a grand opening of the new CVS drugstore as well as their new regional office that is attached. Members spent a few hours interacting with the citizens of laurel and touring the new facility to compete a new preplan.

Outside Gas Leak

Wednesday, November 2nd - Contee Road and Route 1 - Rescue Engine 49 & Chief 49B responded to the report of a broken 4 inch high pressure gas line. Units operated on the scene for over 5 hours. The roads remianed closed during the busy evening rush hour.

2 Alarm Apartment Fire

Tuesday Nvember 1st - Report of an apartment on fire on Attleboro Court. While enroute Rescue Engine 49 and Chief 49B received notification that the occupants may be trapped. On arrival, members of RE49 and E312 performed a primary sreach of the apartment to find that all occupants had managed to escape. Supression teams got water on the fire and contained the fire and damage to the primary fire aprtment. RE49, Cheif 49B (Command), Chief 49 & A499 operated on the scene for approximatley 2 hours. Other units included C10, C19, E312, E781, E412, E351, E112, T19, T10, T70, RS14, EMS1, M49, A19, Special Hazards and BG&E.
