Multi-Jurisdictional MCI Drill

On Wednesday November 17th Chief 49B and Rescue Squad 49 (/c 8) participated with other units from Anne Arundel, Montgomery & Prince George's Counties in a multi-casualty drill that was used to demonstrate the dangers of drinking and racing to area teenagers. There have been over a dozen fatal crashes on area roads that have involved teenagers and excessive speed this past year.

The drill involved 16 patients and 6 vehicles - there were 11 patients trapped in 4 of them. Chief 49B commanded the Extrication Sector.

Squad 49 preformed the extrication on 3 of the vehicles while Squad 4 from Sandy Spring (Montgomery) extricated from the fourth. The crew from S49 then assisted in the Triage and Treatment Sectors while the patients were packaged for transport by one of 4 helicopters used in the Transport Sector.

November 8, 2004. On Monday morning Rescue Squad 49 and Chief 49 were dispatched to a report of a man trapped under a crane in Anne Arundel County. Upon arrival Rescue Squad 49 discovered a worker had been struck with the lattice boom from an overturned crawler crane. The victim was struck with the tip of the boom as it crashed to the ground. Crews from Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department and Medic 49 quickly packaged the patient who was transported by helicopter. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Car into a Pole

November 7, 2004. While out training with the Water Rescue Team, members from LVRS will pulled out on multiple calls. After running an investigation and brush fire, Rescue Engine 49 and A499 were dispatched to a car into a pole on Route 1. Upon their arrival, the crews found the driver of the car laying in the middle of the street. After hitting several other cars he ended up head on into a telephone pole. A quick survey discovered that the patient possibly had multiple lower extremity fractures and requested a helicopter. The patient was ultimately transported by Medic 49.

Upon arrival C49B found multiple cars with several patient strewn across the road. Quick triage found one patient still in the car; while another was found lying on the side of the road. A quick investigation found one of the patient's car off the road seventy-five feet into the woods and overturned in a creek bed.
