Rescue Engine 49 Placed In Service

On Monday the 26th of April Rescue Engine 49, (RE 49) at 0700 was placed in service for the citizens of Price Georges County and the surroundings counties. At 1842 Rescue Engine (with 5) was dispatched on its first call as a Rescue Engine. Rescue Engine 49 responded to the entrance of Canadian Way and Laurel Bowie Road for wires down. Rescue Engine 49 arrived on the scene and found some tree limbs that had fallen onto the wires and were on fire. BGE was contacted and came out to resolve the issue. Rescue Engine 49 returned to service in under 20 minutes.

The crew for the first Rescue Engine call for Co. 49 was Assistant Chief Globerman riding the Officer Seat, Fire Fighter Dodd driving, and Fire Fighters Gill, Wright and Howe in the back.

Squad 49 Transfers to Fire Station 9

On Sunday April 18, 2004, after clearing from a property damage only accident off of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, Rescue Squad 49 was placed on the third alarm fire at 4432 68th Place in Landover Hills. Rescue Squad 1 (Hyattsville) was in the area and was placed on the call and Rescue Squad 49 was placed in service. Rescue Squad 49 was then transferred to Fire Station 9 (Bladensburg) and ran several calls before returning home 4 hours after the initial incident.

Unfortunately 8 brave and skilled men and women from other PGFD fire companies were injured at the Landover Hills incident and transported to area hospitals and Medstar Burn center. We hope for the best and pray for the speedy recovery of those men and women.

One Ejected, One Trapped Under Overturned Van on the Parkway

At 0536 on Sunday April 18, 2004 Rescue Squad 49, Ambulance 499, Medic 49, Chief 49 (Morgan), Chief 49A (Arsenault) and Chief 49B (Globerman) responded to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Power Mill Road. While responding, communications notified units that a state police trooper was on the scene and had one Priority 4 patient and one Priority 1 patient and was requesting a helicopter to transport the patient to a trauma center. Units from 49 arrived on the scene and removed the Priority 1 patient from underneath the car and loaded that patient into the medic unit. The patient was transported to a local trauma center due to the extent of his injuries. Units form 49 cleared in 60 minutes.

Apartment Fire on Contee Road

At 1857 on Saturday April 17, 2004 Rescue Squad 49, Ambulance 496, Medic 49 and Chief 49 (Morgan) were alerted for a box alarm at 8802 Contee Road. Ambulance 496 arrived on the scene first and found heavy smoke in the hallway of the apartment building and smoke showing from the roof. Squad 49 forced entry to the fire floor and began to conduct a primary search of the fire floor. The crew from Squad 49 then split and 3 went to the third floor and 3 to the bottom floor and conducted another primary search. The crew that went to the third floor located a patient that was still in her apartment having an asthma attack and assisted her out of the building and to safety. Units from 49 cleared the fireground in approximately 3 hours and no injuries were reported. The extent of the damage is still being determined and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

First Car Fire in South Laurel For
Rescue Engine 49

Rescue Engine 49 extinguished its first car fire on Thursday April 15, 2004. RE49 running as Squad 49 was dispatched to Laurel Bowie Road and Briarwood Drive for a car fire. Squad 49 arrived on the scene of the parking lot of the Taco Bell and encountered a car fully involved. RE49 extinguished the car fire and cleared in approximately 30 minutes. No other cars in the area were damaged.

Working Afternoon House Fire in Maryland City

At 1312 on Thursday April 15, 2004 Rescue Squad 49 (with 5) responded to 3573 Whiskey Bottom Road in Anne Arundle County. Rescue Squad 49 arrived on the scene and conducted a primary and secondary search of the building, and assisted the units from Maryland City in extinguishing the blaze. Units from 49 cleared in about 2 hours and no injuries were reported.

Daytime Fatal on the Parkway

In the early morning hours of April 9, 2004, Rescue Squad 49 (with 5), Ambulance 499 and Medic 49 were alerted for a motor vehicle collision on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Rescue Squad 49 just cleared a box alarm at 200 Fort Mead road and was on 197 returning home when the call was toned out. Rescue Squad 49 arrived on the scene first and found one patient trapped in the car. Due to the injuries of the patient it was decided that the patient would be left in the car until the U.S. Park Police completed their investigation. Squad 49 cleared in approximately 4 hours both Medic 49 and ambulance 499 cleared in approximately 45 minutes.

Weekend Starts off With Basement Fire

On Friday April the Second, 2004 Rescue Squad 49 (with 7 fire fighters), Ambulance 498, Medic 49, C49 (Morgan) and C49A (Arsenault) responded to 8502 Spruce Hill Drive for a reported basement fire with people trapped. Engine Company 10 arrived on the scene first and encountered smoke showing and discovered that all residents had made it out safely. The units from 49 arrived on the scene and Rescue Squad 49 staffed the RIC (Rapid Intervention Crew) sector, C49 (Morgan) had the safety division, C49A (Arsenault) had the EMS sector, since there were a large number of residents that were displaced as this house was being utilized as a group home. Ambulance 498 was used to transport the residents to a hotel where they would spend the night. No injuries were reported and the units from 49 cleared in approximately 2 hours.
